I wish I could say that I've always known about Juneteenth and understood its role and importance in black history. Unfortunately, black history beyond enslavement and the Emancipation Proclamation, isn't regularly taught in school.

I want that to end with me. It's so important (even more so, now) to me that my children understand their history and appreciate their culture. Especially now that we are surrounded by so much hate and frankly, lack of appreciation for the struggles of those that lived and died before us and for us.

So here are a few books to help you navigate the teaching of our history to your children - no matter what age they are and ultimately, help you raise children that are "woke".

Newborn - Preschool Age

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

3rd Grade - 5th Grade

Middle School

High School

One important thing to remember is that it is not enough to simply read these books with your kids, make sure you actually discuss the book afterwards - especially with older children.
